Professor O Kim’s research synthesizes findings across spatial demography, public health, and environmental risks, all framed by the unprecedented demographic shift in South Korea—characterized by the world’s lowest total fertility rate and fastest super aging. His talk will be twofold: (a) It will show how depopulation and super aging will progress in South Korea in a spatially and temporally explicit way via population projection and dasymetric mapping with the support of ensemble machine learning and geographic information systems (GIS). He will also discuss how such population dynamics will impact South Korea, including but not limited to, in terms of insufficient blood supply, hospitals, and K-12 schools. (b) When future environmental risks, namely extreme heat, sea-level rise, and air pollution, are taken into account, he argues that such risks must be researched differently for countries, like South Korea and Taiwan, because our demographic shifts progress as well as climate change impacts are more extreme than other developed countries. In conclusion, his research demonstrates the necessity of integrating advanced spatial demographic forecasts with both environmental and public health models. The findings provide localized, high-resolution evidence crucial for allocating resources, adapting to climate change, and securing public health infrastructure amidst South Korea’s rapidly transforming demographic structure.
Dr. Kim is an Associate Professor at Korea University. He is the current Secretary General of the Asian Population Association.
Dr. Kim’s work is salient to many of our research areas. His core expertise is the coupled human-environment system, tackling key questions through the lenses of spatial demography, land change science, and the environmental pressures of climate change. His geographic specialization in East Asia—especially his research on the unique environment of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)—is particularly compelling.
