演講簡介
In this presentation, I examine the social networks of international students pursuing Masters of Law (LLM) degrees at two U.S. based law schools. I examine the structure and determinants of friendship and learning ties among a cohort of international law students. Using data from the Student Experiences in Law School Study, I employ network visualization, descriptive network analyses, and exponential random graph models to examine the extent to which homophily, transitivity, and categorical closure organize the friendship and learning networks of LLM students. Preliminary results suggest that learning ties tend to be less strong, have lower mutuality, and have higher levels of intransitivity than friendship ties. Both friendships and learning ties are organized by substantial homophily based on nationality or region as well as triadic closure processes. The high levels of network segregation in friendships among international law students have implications for students’ learning ties, which are likely critical for student academic success.
