This paper revisits a long-standing debate in assimilation research by offering a theoretical and methodological reassessment of how both origin and destination contexts shape migrants’ trajectories of assimilation and dissimilation in gender role ideologies. I critically evaluate two dominant approaches to contextualizing migrant attitudes: the nominal approach, which treats group or nationality as a categorical variable, and the average-variable approach, which uses national-level averages as measures of cultural norms. Both, I argue, fall short of capturing the complexity of migrants’ attitudinal environments. In this study, I propose a new perspective that situates migrants’ attitudes within the social networks of individuals with similar backgrounds in both origin and destination societies. Using data from the European Social Survey and the World Values Survey, I employ an innovative methodological strategy that combines multiple imputations with cross-classified multilevel models. By anchoring estimates in migrants’ embedded social contexts, this approach offers greater precision and reveals assimilation and dissimilation as gradual, networked processes.
