John Chung-En Liu is an Associate Professor of Sociology at National Taiwan University and serves in the International Program on Climate Change and Sustainable Development. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, a MEM from the Yale School of the Environment, a MA in International and Development Economics from Yale University, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from National Taiwan University. Before joining National Taiwan University, he was an Assistant Professor at Occidental College and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Liu’s primary research interests lie in applying a sociological lens to climate change and various environmental issues. He is accustomed to and enjoys interdisciplinary collaboration, which has led to his contributions being published in various academic journals and featured in media outlets like Foreign Policy, The Guardian, and Public Radio International. Recently, his work has focused on the challenges Taiwan faces in its transition towards net-zero emissions, particularly Just Transition and carbon pricing in the Taiwanese context. Liu aspires to use research findings to guide policy and practical action.
In addition to his research, Liu is passionate about teaching. He values the opportunity to engage with students, fostering a collaborative and inquisitive learning environment that equips them to navigate the challenges of pursuing sustainability.
